Physical Description: Nigel is muscular, but not the bodybuilder type. Standing at 6' 2", he's got green/hazel eyes, and black hair, which he usually just let's do what it wants, changing it whenever he gets bored. Personality: Nigel is something of a troublemaker and a clown, who's usually got at least a smirk on his face, even if it's on his way to detention. He's a bit of a daredevil and thrill seeker, and loves to have fun, no matter what it is he's doing. He's sarcastic, charismatic, and extremely energetic. If things don't move fast, they're not interesting, and if they're not interesting, you can bet that Nigel will try and make them that way. Despite his antics and seemingly incessant penchant for trouble, Nigel is well-meaning and good-natured, not to mention charming [especially when it comes to getting out of a trip to the dean's office], and lovable. His silver tongue hasn't only made him popular amongst the lunch ladies and other faculty members, but has also gotten him out of some pretty sticky situations.
Background
Nigel Ryder was born the son of Fredrick Ryder, an Australian Ambassador to the U.S. Since his father was always away on business, Nigel never really had a male role model in his life, and his mother, being the CEO of a pharmaceutical company that she was, left him to the nanny once he was old enough to wean. The only time Nigel ever saw them was for the holidays, which usually just meant Christmas. By the time Nigel was old enough to start school, he could count the times he'd seen his parents in person on two hands, so when they told him they'd be sending him away to a boarding school, Nigel wasn't fazed a bit. If anything, he was excited that he'd be leaving the huge empty house he was currently in; moving away from ‘home’ was more gain than loss. Over the years, Nigel made many friends at his new boarding school [an all boys boarding school in Melbourne], and grew up with them, becoming the leader of their little band of brothers, oblivious to any misery that might, or could befall them. It wasn’t until he was fourteen that he realized there was more to life than “black and white”, one day on a solo trip into the city where he stumbled upon the most beautiful boy he’d ever seen. His name was Richard, he was older, and something about him just attracted Nigel, and from the signals the other boy was sending back, it seemed like the attraction was mutual. Before he knew it, he was sneaking out late at night to meet up with the other boy, sharing tentative kisses with him, cuddling, exploring each other's bodies; everything he’d pictured doing with a girl he did with him and it felt so… right. Despite the fact that he was in love with Richard, something inside nagged at him. If this was right, then why were they hiding it? It was beautiful, too beautiful to keep secret, but when he asked Richard if he could tell his friends, Richard ended things without an explanation. Confused and heartbroken, Nigel confided in his mentor [his mentor being the only person he trusted fully] who assured him that there was nothing wrong, that this phase was temporary, and should not be mentioned ever again. Nigel knew the man was very much mistaken, but felt it was in his best interests to heed his advice and suppress this ‘dysfunction’. Despite his initial plan for reform, however, Nigel grew tired of denying something he felt so strongly, and continued being romantically involved with both sexes. A year later, Nigel was discovered in bed with his roommate and was expelled on grounds of ‘unnatural behavior’ and ‘immoral conduct’. Considering the danger in which this put his father’s reputation, Nigel’s parents promptly whisked him back to the mausoleum he’d been trained to call ‘home’. Thankfully, he’d found out about Goldfinch on the internet before he’d been caught, and after much begging, his parents agreed to send him there, where he’s been ever since.
